Fall Is All About Hiking

With the summer heat on its way out, being outdoor is favorable again! We heartedly encourage all of our Little Fish families to spend as much time as they can outside while the weather’s nice. Before you know it, snow ❄️ will be upon us! Here’s a list of 5 Hikes for Fredericksburg Families to Enjoy. Take a look!

1. Rappahannock River Heritage Trail

Rappahannock River Heritage Trail

Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is in the heart of Fredericksburg. If you’re driving through Fredericksburg, then no doubt you’ve seen this trail as it stretches along the Rappahannock River. It is a 3.1 miles loop on a wide, easy path that anyone can enjoy. With many great views, the Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is a must for all families!

2. Smith Run Trail

Smith Run Trail

Smith Run Trail is not a very well-known trail in the Fredericksburg area. This hidden treasure is great because it isn’t as crowded as some of the other trails in Fredericksburg! This trail is still loved by many, for family walks or to talk your dogs. This is a nice & easy trail for the family to enjoy, it is 1.1 miles long in and through a forest-like environment. This makes Smith Run Trail quiet and beautiful, which is perfect for a quick family hike.

3. Ficklen Island

Ficklen Island

As the name implies, Ficklen Island is a small “island” in the Rappahannock River. This one can be a bit challenging to get to, because it can be accessed by wading through shallow waters. You definitely want to check this one out before it gets too cold outside! We think this is a fun  adventure just waiting to happen. It’s a quick hike once you are on the “island,” but the fun does not end there! Don’t forget your fishing gear! This area is a great option for both fishing an swimming. What better way to end a hike? Pack your supplies and head for a great day at Ficklen Island!

4. Alum Spring Park

Alum Spring Park

Nestled in the heart of Fredericksburg, Alum Spring Park is your one-stop shop for hiking. You will find grills, horseshoe pits, a picnic shelter, playground equipment, restrooms, and a walking path. You can do all of it here! Not to mention a couple of spots along the river that kids will be able to splash around if they want. Alum Spring Park is a great place to get a nice hike and have some awesome family fun afterward.

5. Virginia Central Railway Trail

Virginia Central Railway Trail

Another excellent option for an easy hike in Fredericksburg is the Virginia Central Railway Trail. This 2.7-mile hike runs on a wall-maintained asphalt path. Here you can expect an excellent trail for walking, lots of historical signs, and the beauty of nature. The Virginia Central Railway Trail is a must-add to anyone’s hiking catalog, and we highly recommend it. one of the entrances to the trail is right by Alum Spring Park – so you can enjoy both of these at once!
