Would it surprise you that almost half of the people worldwide do not know how to swim?Β Gallup tells us that in 2019 only 57% of men and 32% of women were capable of swimming unassisted. We need to fix that!
Good or Bad Reasons?! π€
Over the last 17 years in business, we have heard many excuses for not learning how to swim. We get it – swimming can be intimidating! While there are some valid reasosn for not learning how to swim (medical, lack of a safe area to swim..) there are also some not-so-good reasons that we want to help people work through! Here are 5 common reasons why people don’t take swim lessons: β¬οΈ
1. “When I was a kid, my parents just threw me in!” π³
While this is certainly quick…it is not a great way to be introduced to the water ππ». Not only does this increase the risk of drowning, it can lead you to have an unnecessary fear of water – no one likes to be thrown into the pool without permission! π£
If this was your experience, no doubt you have some nervous feelings when it comes to swimming πββοΈ. And who can blame you?! John Wayne tried itβ¦Β Don’t worry, at Little Fish Swimming, we wonβt just throw you in. We promise! π
2. “My child will work on learning to swim when they’re older” π§πΌπ¦π½
It might seem a safer approach to wait until your child is older to get them in swim lessons, but did you know that is not necessarily true? π Healthy Children tells us that the younger, the better when learning to swim! That is why we always preach The Sooner The Safer! There is no clear benefit to waiting to learn to swim π€―. In fact, there are more benefits swimming gives children than you might think. Check out our blog where we talk about Why Swim Lessons Are Essential For Kids!
3. “I’m going to teach my kid myself!” ππΌββοΈππΌ
Don’t get us wrong – we see the good intentions here! π We truly think parents mean this when they tell us they’re going to teach their children how to swim. However, it can be difficult to ensure your child knows all of the necessary swim skills to stay safe in and around the water when teaching them yourself. Our Swim Instructors are trained to work with all age groups, to ensure they learn how to swim as efficiently and as safely as possible π.
4. “We’re going to focus our children’s time in another sport instead” β½οΈ
We love seeing children staying involved in a variety of activities – including other sports! π However, it is important to us that our Little Fish Families understand that swimming is the only sport that can save your life. ππΌ We agree – exposing your children to a variety of activities is excellent for them! π However, learning to swim is a skill all children need to learn, and shouldn’t be passed up for other activities. We make it easy to squeeze in swim lessons around other activities – swim lessons only take up 30 minutes of your time – one day a week.Β
5. “We don’t have time for swim lessons!” β°
We already touched on this in reason #4, but we can’t stress this enough – swim lessons don’t have to take up a ton of time! β±οΈ We believe swim lessons should be sustainable, and not take up too much of your Little Fish’s time. There’s only so many hours in the day, and we want their day filled with a variety of things they want to accomplish! π That’s why our monthly swim lessons meet once a week for 30 minutes. We don’t want time to keep families from teaching their children this lifesaving skill! ππΌββοΈ
